About This Book

Cambodia's buildings in wood have received little attention from architects or historians, even though the craft of building in wood dates from ancient times. However, no wooden structures dating from before the last 20 years of the 19th century have survived. There has been more interest in the conservation and construction methods of wooden domestic buildings and prayer halls in recent years, and this book is further evidence of that interest. A group of anthropologists, architects, and iconographers have written nine papers that highlight the art and techniques of building in wood in Cambodia and examine the symbolic and social implications of this art. The papers are grouped under three main sections: Wooden structures: impermanence, craftsmanship, and tradition; Traditional homes: building and microcosm; and the Wooden prayer hall: local and personal expressions of a Buddhist art. With colour photographs, line drawings, glossary and references. Bilingual in English and Khmer.
